About Data by Four & Meet the Team
Data by Four
Data by Four was founded in 2021, to combine knowledge on clinical research, especially in the fields of rare disease, spin-off and start-up companies, and for rescue studies. In other words, we are perfectly able to support standard-rolling studies, but we thrive on complicated data challenges where we can step-up to get the best for patients!
We are involved and engaged, flexible and quickly adapting, we offer direct contact with the relevant team-member(s).

Meet the Team
Just van Es
Director and Sr. Biostatistician
Just van Es co-founded Data by Four. He holds an MSc in Life Sciences and is a VVS-registered Biostatistician. Just understands statistical needs and limitations. Just worked for several CROs since 2009.
Just has always been interested in performing research with the goal to either understand how systems work, or how to help people to feel better and make life easier when challenged. It was a logical step for Just to study psychology, first clinical psychology and later with greater focus on neuropsychology. Next, he worked on fundamental neuroimaging and psychophysical research where Just started with programming. After university, he started working for CRO’s in 2009 as a biostatistician. There he gained broad experience in the field of clinical research and statistics, which resulted in registration as a biostatistician with the Dutch professional association for Statistics (VVS). With his expanding knowledge, adaptation of CDISC, shift towards a more central role in projects, Just contributed to the well-being of patients in a large number of pharmacological and medical device studies. Fields of research include ophthalmology, audiology, cardiovascular systems, neurology, female reproductive systems, rare diseases, and vaccination. In parallel, Just was part of an Animal Care and Use Committee where he had to assess scientific and ethical aspects versus animal discomfort and suffering caused by the proposed research plans.
To translate the data to understandable and reportable output, reflecting the statistical choices, Just became very experienced in representing study results. Ultimately, he developed SAS toolsets, including a navigable TLF output system for easy maintenance and easy integration for Medical Writers, Study Reports, presentations, and so on. With his expanding knowledge, adaptation of CDISC, and playing a central role in projects, he grew to be a study statistician. To support vulnerable patients, the focus shifted to orphan drugs, to spin-off-company initiated studies, and to rescue studies. In 2021, Just co-founded Data by Four.
Today, Just combines al of these forces in Data by Four, where he is Director and Sr. Biostatistician, TLF output programmer, and creator of CDISC packages.

Jochem Verstappen
Director and Sr. Data Scientist
Jochem Verstappen co-founded Data by Four. He holds a PhD in the bio-medical field, and he has setup company-wide CDISC programming structures several times. Jochem works for the pharmaceutical industry since 2010.
Since his early childhood, Jochem started programming. He kept on programming throughout his entire life and has worked with many different programming languages. At the same time, he got highly interested in life sciences and had a strong motivation to support vulnerable patients. Not really surprisingly, Jochem was trained as a medically-oriented biologist, where he initially found the combination of all: life sciences, the fundamental base for drug development, systemic thinking for which he could utilize and program computers. Getting more in depth he moved to study the importance of bone-marrow derived cells in wound healing to obtain his PhD.
Next, he moved to a generic pharmaceutical company, where he started at the department of pharmacovigilance, as he now was trained as a scientific writer and he could use, create, and adapt programs and scripts to get results efficiently in a standardized way. Two years later, he switched his career to the medical writing department at a CRO. Here, he could grow to his full potential as programmer for the pharmaceutical field by creating a large MS Word Add-on toolbar, to introduce both complex functionality and higher levels of standardization throughout customized templates for regulatory submission documents. From there, the small gap to become a SAS programmer was taken easily. With his experience in many fields, he created many tools in SAS, with both compatibility with regulatory reports for medical writing as with data standardization. With the upcoming requirement of CDISC around 2015, Jochem trained himself. He set up CDISC processes resulting in successful data submissions to the FDA. With the rising field of data science and his curiosity for the field, Jochem completed a Data Science with Python training. Currently, he is enrolled in a course to extend his data science knowledge to R. In 2021, Jochem co-founded Data by Four and he is also volunteering in the CDISC OAK in R team.
Today, Jochem combines al of his strengths in Data by Four, where he is Director and Sr. Data Scientist, TLF output programmer, CDISC packages creator, and developer.

Rosalie van Es
Office Manager
Rosalie van Es joined Data by Four in 2024. She is trained in office management. Rosalie supports all types of important tasks to keep things run smoothly.
Rosalie studied various fields, but started her career obtaining a degree in Office Management. She then studied International Relations (BA) and Religion/Theology while working as a help desk employee for a government agency and as a volunteer in social care.
Joining the Data by Four team she returned to her roots in office management. Her interest is in providing a working background where things run smoothly. Putting a smile on everyone’s face as well as making sure the internet, ink and everybody’s bank account won’t run dry. She will be able to answer all your questions concerning the organization of Data by Four.
